I enjoyed this book a very interesting plot and the author is very good at describing the place and making you feel it.

My only sticking point is the kiss stealing, handshaking, child teaching Saint Bruno, he is just too good and clean. I like my protagonists to be a little grey, Bruno is just too good, sickly so. I don't know whether it is just for this book but he is too perfect to be plausible.

A good first entry and I do own most of the series so I will likely continue it, I only hope there's more depth and darkness to Bruno.

3.5 but couldn’t round up. Dordogne setting is great and historical context, but some unfortunate stereotypes distract from the plot.

This book has everything: a delightful and intriguing cast of characters, mentions of good food that made my mouth water, history lessons (learned a few things), a compelling mystery with twists, a wrestle with questions about justice and morality, and a healthy dose of armchair traveling. Vive la France! Thoroughly enjoyed and am eager to read the rest of this series.

After reading several Fantasy novels by Sanderson, I needed a change, and Martin Walker's Bruno Chief of Police (in rural France), fit the bill. I liked his discussion of French history (mostly WWII, but more) and food.
