Second or third time through this book, first time as an audiobook, though. Inspired Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" (which I plan to watch again soon), which in turn inspired Walter Hill's "Last Man Standing" starring Bruce Willis, a movie I didn't care for much when it came out, but am now thinking of revisiting.
This book may have some of Hammett's best plotting, but also his most opaque leading man. It's also noticeably lighter on the banter that I love in Hammett and Chandler* — but there are a couple of good ones that made me laugh out loud. I think there is real potential for someone like a David Milch to do a series based on the "Continental Op" books. It would be the perfect companion to Deadwood.

*and Westlake too —ooh, maybe time to pull out one of those books again!

Hammett's protagonist doesn't light cigarettes, he "sets fire" to them. He doesn't don a clean shirt, he "bends a fresh collar." From the language to the settings, the plot, the characters, everything fits in this tight bit of noir.
Hammett, of course, was one of the OG noir writers with many of his titles turned into successful noir movies.
In "Red Harvest" Hammett writes a bare knuckle story with plenty of violence and bloodshed. Sort of. As in the movies, the violence is portrayed but it isn't gory or detailed in any way; except in one's imagination.
If you enjoy dark crime stories you'll have to go a long way to find better then "Red Harvest.'

I first read this decades ago. Mostly I remembered the violence. But dang this is a great book. Morally ambiguous is an understatement. The Continental Op cleans up a town whether it wants to be cleaned up or not. Adventure galore!
