Premise was solid enough, but it had far more potential as an adult novel. Publishing as YA limited how much Sutherland was able to explore her ideas, and as a result… it wasn’t very good.

I'm going to be thinking about this one for a long time. What a devastating ending!

I LOVED the way this story was carried out. It unfolded with lots of little clues. It all built up to a very spectacular story with wonderful twists and turns! A great book, that I binged on this weekend.

Dark and twisty and interesting. All of the descriptions had me glued to the pages. The death and decay vibe was just so prevalent everywhere but described with such tangible imagery.

A WHOLE star off for that egregious kiss though. Did not need that to be in the story. We can have platonic relationships between sexes too, you know

This book had great potential, but in my opinion, it wasn't great. It never got super exciting because the plot seemed to drag on a bit. Overall, also pretty predictable.

edit: i'm bumping it to five stars, i can't stop thinking about this book

this book was awesome, i loved the magical realism and the aesthetic of it, but it was way too disturbing for me to rate it five stars. be mindful of the trigger warnings, there were some scenes that left me reeling.

Stunned by how much I enjoyed this. An entirely solid horror book no matter the YA label. The mystery is fast-paced and gripping. All three of the hollow sisters are distinct and strange in their own way. Has a few points of dialogue that are on the more juvenile side but considering the intended audience is expected. Definitely a new fave.

I really liked this book overall. The story was super intense and engaging, and it sucked me in right away. The character relationships were really deep and interesting.
The only thing I didn’t like was that the gore was a bit too much for me, to the point where I felt nauseous during the last third of the book.

This is a dark mystery adventure in which no woman seeks the help of a man at any point. There is no big strong man waiting to save the frail woman who has been disenfranchised or kidnapped. The women are the things in the dark. I loved every literary aspect of this story. At some point the writing is so well done and descriptive it truly feels like you're standing in it. This book delves into the deep connection between sisters, family, friends and truly explores the complexities of the phrase, "the blood of the Covenant is thicker than the water of the womb." A sad twisted tail of loss, grief, and questioning how well you really know the people you hold closest. Could not stop reading.
