Fun, violent read squarely inside historical fiction genre. Admittedly a guilty pleasure book, I picked it up after watching all the Netflix seasons.

The book focuses a lot more on young Utred. He spends a bunch of time with his adopted dad. He sees bqttle, does raids, meets a ton of Danes... and I noticed that the author worked very hard to include accurate historical data such as tasks done by ladies, tasks done by sorcerers, and also tasks performed by smiths. For instance, he describes the types of metal swords, and explains how the shards are composed of different elements heated differently, and also explains just generally what the characters did to ensure the weapons turned out.

Obviously this wasn't the bulk of the text, which was mostly preparing for battle, planning battle, training for battle and... battling. Utred shocks himself that he's any good and continues to shock himself by being selected by others to take leadership posts. Then, he speaks confidently about topics he's hardly trained for and throngs of men roar into battle close behind.

There's defenitely more to the book, like the more intricate monarchical interplays and the less delicate but more decisive Danish war councils.

First book covers most of season 1. His relationship with Brida is somewhat more in depth, and there's more on Thyra as well. Ubba is less central to the text and more enigmatic.

The book has similar but not identical humor. It's more rooted in Utred's deceitfulness or unabashed defiance. For instance, Alfred asks a diatribe of questions to prove how Christian Utred is, and he says all the right things, but Alfred shows he knows he's lying when he asks why he wears a necklace of Thor's hammer.

Don’t enjoy the narration style, bland, paper-thin characters, and focus on military conflicts only.

What a great book. Characters are built with a lot of depth, with dreams, beliefs, hopes and fears. The Viking world is brought to life in a natural, smooth manner. Battles, as always, can almost be envisioned through Cornwell's descriptive prowess.

When I remember I spent hours reading that godforsaken Angus instead of this, I just want to jump off a cliff...

Вторият прочит е точно толкова добър, колкото и първият.
