An Ideal Husband by Erica James

I honestly disliked almost all the elements of this book. The book is called ‘A ideal husband’ but we barely explore what Kip was like as the ‘ideal husband’ before he tore his family apart with his affair. He also clearly was not an ideal husband if he had been lying to his wife about being unhappy and doing nothing to fix the relationship and then cheating on her. I think this was a bad choice of title.

The book not only follows (chapters in POV) Kip and his new girlfriend, the wife he left Louisa, but also there 3 children and their partners. I think there were two many sub story lines to follow. It would have made more sense to follow Louisa and how she deals with the fall out maybe touching on how it also affects the other adult children and a bit about how it wasn’t how he expected. Instead we are pulled off into the story of three marriages, dating, babies and arguments. There are too many directions to feel like you deeply touched any of them. The author also brings in side characters that were that were just forgotten about, like Louisa’s sister who literally tells her to get over the affair and move on only a few months after it happens.

Majority of the characters we followed were unlikable and unrealistic and they didn’t experience any character growth as the book went on. I would not recommend!

If you are a fan of contemporary family saga, then An Ideal Husband is the novel for you.
The storyline revolves around the Langford family; parents Kip and Louisa, their adult children, Arabella, Ashley (with their respective partners and children), and Angus.
From the opening pages, the Langford family are in crisis, as husband Kip has announced his intention to divorce his wife Louisa, and move in with his girlfriend, Zoe - who happens to be the ex-girlfriend of his youngest son Angus.
With multiple PoV, the reader is provided with an insight into the thoughts and emotions of each character, thus adding an extra element of depth and substance to the storyline. And helps to avoid the reader from automatically associating stereotypes with characters such as Kit. We were given the opportunity to learn about his "side", and emotions, rather than his simply being "the cheating husband". Mind you, I'm still Team Louisa!
An Ideal Husband is the story of a year within this complex family where family dynamics, love, health and divorce are all
This is a brilliant contemporary take on modern family dynamics as they encounter love, divorce and mental health issues. All wrapped up in a humorous and easy to read tale.
