This was absolutely heart wrenching, especially the first half oml. I read the trigger warning but I was not expecting THAT. It was so beautifully done and brought so much light to survivors of domestic abuse. I’m gonna need a comfort show after this but one of my favorites, for sure <3

Before reading this book please look at the tw!
I really liked this book and it had potential to be a five star read but it was extremely gory and very disturbing. The explicit scenes of rape and violence weren't what I was prepared for when I wanted to read a romance with a complicated setting.  Maybe thats my fault for not reading through the tw or the publishers fault for not labeling the book correctly. I felt like this book was more about the domestic abuse than about the romance.
I also have some other minors problems with the book, like how the MMC wasn't empathetic enough for my liking. I mean I don't expect him to react perfectly in every scenario but he doesn't even concider to ask her about a lot of things and when he does he's a bit judgy. But the biggest fault of the book were definitely the overly explicit scenes of abuse.

Jesus. This book is intense and emotional and amazing. Iris and August circle each other for a long time before finally coming together. Their story is beautiful and tragic and I loved it.

Iris is involved with another man for much of the story, and that man is abusive. There are graphic descriptions of the physical and sexual abuse she endures.

“Struggle does not make you weak,” she whispers back. “Struggling against those who hold us is what makes us, over time, stronger than they are. Strong enough to fight back. Strong enough to win.” 💪🏽🩷

Okay. This one was heavy like everyone said. I don’t personally have a lot of triggers, but definitely check the trigger warnings on this one folks.

Overall I enjoyed this book. “Hopscotch” nearly broke me in the first half. I appreciate Kennedy Ryan’s ability to dive into the hard topics and somehow infuse joy, hope, and resilience into stories with difficult themes or circumstances.

This one did feel more repetitive and wordy than some of her other books I’ve read. I feel like it could have been a bit shorter as well.

“She remembered who she was and the game changed.” 🥹

Update to my review: I finished this several days ago and I still haven’t been able to stop thinking about this book.

It does a “wonderful” (for lack of better terms) job depicting abuse, gaslighting, and manipulation, and why it’s not always something that’s easy to “just leave”.
