Wow. This is such a well-crafted and powerful book. I read the original novel in 9th grade, and even before I reread it a few years ago, it was a visceral and important reading experience that stayed with me. Even though it was published almost 20 years ago, the novel still holds up. And this graphic novel adaptation is an incredible work on its own. The art is gorgeous and expressive; it suits Melinda's narration and character incredibly well. Art and visual imagination play a big role in the story so the medium seems particularly appropriate. Also, the text has been edited and adapted really well - often when novels are adapted into comics/graphic novels, there is too much text or the editing feels choppy but here it works really well.

This book is so powerful. It positively breaks your heart watching this young girl be ostracized and vilified for being a victim. I truly believe every high schooler should read this book (and the written version).
Certainly well done and wrenching in it's own right. But, at the same time, makes me very sad to think of it acting in any way as a replacement for the original novel.
It really makes me want to read the original and see how different the books are. The author said some of it was updated so it felt more like a novel in contemporary times rather than in the 90s it was originally set it in, but I didn’t see much of a difference, except she uses a cell phone a couple of times.
Wow! This updated version of the landmark SPEAK does not disappoint! The subtle updates only enhance the message of consent for young women. The design and graphics are gorgeously haunting as you watch Melinda work through her painful journey.
Haunting graphic novel of Laurie Halse Anderson's landmark SPEAK. May this help get the story into more hands, and more minds, and more hearts.
