This was heavy, and yet vital, reading.

I firmly believe that working to improve our understanding of ourselves and our understanding of others makes for a better world because that understanding introduces us to and allows us to deepen our kindness and compassion.  The insight detailed in this story has done just that.

I'm grateful for this experience.

An extremely powerful piece of work. With full support from the author, rising artist Emily Carroll interprets a very important book into a graphic novel that I'll not soon forget. I remember Mrs. Anderson visiting my high school. Even though I got a copy of Speak then, I never read it, but I may do so now for comparison.

It's been awhile since I've read the original [b:Speak|439288|Speak|Laurie Halse Anderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1310121762s/439288.jpg|118521], but I've read it enough times to remember quite a bit, and from what I remember, this graphic novel adaption is spot-on. Obviously, things have to be left out, but it follows the original pretty closely. The illustrations are perfect and help fill in some of the text that was left out. And there are a few well-done updates, like Melinda has a cell phone now (definitely not a thing when [b:Speak|439288|Speak|Laurie Halse Anderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1310121762s/439288.jpg|118521] came out in 1999).

The thing that really stood out to me though is how relevant and important this book still is, 20-some years after it was originally written. I know [b:Speak|439288|Speak|Laurie Halse Anderson|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1310121762s/439288.jpg|118521] is still a very popular book, but I think this version will attract a new crowd, and hopefully help some people who desperately need it.

Something bad happened to Melinda, and now noone at school will talk or listen to her, so she doesn't seem the point in talking anymore. Will she be able to open up through her art?

When I picked this up, I didn't realise it was an adaptation of a novel and as much as I think this works really well as a graphic novel, I think I would have preferred the novel.

That isn't to say I didn't enjoy this and it wasn't worth reading, but I think quite a lot of the nuance of the story is likely missed. But this is surrounding really important issues and is self expression and it really is a good read, would recommend.

a graphic novel with good drawings and a heavy story.
