4,5 stars actually. this book was amazing and engaging read and I srsly can't believe the author was only 27 when she wrote it, most of this book is so heavy and truly heart breaking at times, you'd think you need to be much older to write sth like that.
it reads more like the collection of short stories which I actually really liked and each of those many characters were interesting and so well written that I was rooting for all of them (which doesn't happen often to me when I am reading non-genre fiction).
the only thing I found confusing was that I could not place all of these characters exactly in time as I don't know v well neither history of US nor Ghana and I wish there were some dates in family tree for ignorant ppl like me.

This book almost reads like a collection of (highly connected) short stories in how it's told - each chapter being the next generation of a family line. I was very impressed by the writing, how the author mananges to address lots of complex and nuanced topics without any direct comments, just through the story telling. Very effective. In a lot of the chapters, everything just sucked and it was hard to read. Just as I was starting to loose interest towards the end it wrapped up in a very satisfying way.

Ich fand die Charaktere sehr vielfälitig und alle Geschichten spannend, was ich nicht erwartet hätte, da Kurzgeschichten normalerweise nicht so mein Ding sind. Es hat mir auch sehr gefallen, wie die Familienmitglieder aus anderen Teilen des Romans in der Geschichte der Kinder wieder aufgetaucht sind und man sie so noch weiter begleiten konnte. Ansonsten fand ich dennoch manche Abschnitte hart zu lesen und sehr deprimierend, das ist natürlich nichts negatives, aber es war intensiver als ich erwartet hatte.
