I took my time with this and I'm glad I did. By the end I felt truly emotional about how deeply I knew the genealogy and legacy of this family lineage. An incredible way of depicting the unfolding history of many people across Africa and the African diaspora.

a lyrical narrative of Africans and African-Americans, a family tree sprawling from the slave trade to today, an absolute tour de force. definitely one of the best books of the year for me

For me this novel was a history lesson and went further back than I had before in slavery and it's impact. I loved how it told the story of each generation and the impact of how decisions being made for you can direct a lives for generations. It was uncomfortable to read but I needed to read it to learn. So well written and has made a lasting impact. I truly believe it's a story we should all read especially in countries directly involved.
