4.5ish. I really liked the unique elemental part to the story. The things that bothered me was the insta-love and the fact that a lot of the events were very similar to the Twilight storyline. I am looking forward to the next book though. I also hope there is more Ireland references.
Did not like it what-so-ever. It took my two weeks to get done with this book and I can honestly say I would never read it again.
Right.
I'm really not sure what to give this. I started off hovering over four, but some of my fave books are at four stars so it doesn't belong there, but nor, do i feel, does it wholly belong in 2 or 3...
Unfortunately, I read some reviews before actually reading the book, and the whol twilight thing got stuck in my head, so i was continuously picking out bits that did, in fact, remind me of twilight. Because of that though, I'm going to try and review without mentioning the twi-trash again. I promise i will try my hardest not to bring it up again.

The writing of this book is average. It's not that it's terrible as such, but it's certainly not going to be winning any awards. And if it does, I'm sure they won't be prestigious ones.
I found the world/picture building in this to be seriously lacking. Even now i have no clear images in my mind of who/what i just read.
In the first few pages, we're introduced to Caitlin and Adam. Adam was described as "a tall boy" and Caitlin had a "chirpy voice". I don't even remember much about their other features. I find that, if we are going to be introduced to a character, we should be told SOME features about them... Honestly. In my head, Adam became my best guy mate. Why? Because he is tall too. So by the time we're given his description, it's too late. Best guy mate is stuck there. (well.. that is until things get romantic, then my mind decides to replace mate with the guy i'm into)
Caitlin could be anyone. really. I know we get told what she looks like a few pages later, but, again, by then, i've already established an image in my mind.
To be fair, I shouldn't complain too much about that, as even though i was told early what Aine looked like, I still pictured Daenerys. Something about that moth scene just made me picture her that way.
Onwards.
It was repetitive..
SO REPETITIVE
Repetitive to the point where every time she got kissed passionately, I wanted to bang my head on something.

There was this one time, when I was away with my mates and I attempted to turn Harry Potter into a fan fic, then and there for my friends, but failed miserably because everything happened slowly
This is along the lines of how my terrible impromptu fan fic went:
"Harry slowly took his shirt off as he slowly kissed Ginny on the lips. Slowly she worked her hands up his chest and slowly rubbed his nipples."
I learnt then that if you use the word slowly too often, or any other word for that matter, it starts to lose something. So for me, by the 5th or 6th passionately I was well over it. Maybe he should have tried kissing her in other ways? Softly? Fiercely? Deeply? Frantically? I dunno, But any other word that passionately! Please for the love of god no more!
And yes, this book is achingly similar to a book that has been mentioned but shall not be named. So many similar aspects. I'm just not sure i would have noticed so much had i not read reviews. I kind of wish i hadn't read them, and could have gone into the book with a clearer mind
In saying that the writing is average, It's still WAY better than i could ever do and I did have one moment where my heart did a little skip and i got a little like this

And lamely, that was when he texted her. In the morning. The first time.
There is nothing quite like that first text from someone when you have been crushing on them forever. And I think because of the fact that i could relate to that one single moment, and that one moment kept me reading the rest of the book, is the reason i'm not giving this book 2 stars.
I have a major issue with most books when the protagonist falls in love so fast.
In my fave book ever ([bc:Son of the Shadows|13927|Son of the Shadows (Sevenwaters, #2)|Juliet Marillier|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1316131224s/13927.jpg|2801045]), the protagonist falls in love within a week of being with the guy, but something about their connection is so strong and believable, unlike in this book.
I really do hate it when they fall in love so quick. I do understand that teenagers are SO quick to use the word love, but some times it just racks the nerves.
I feel like this book would have been better had their entire relationship stemmed over the course of a longer period. There was a bit i was going to quote, but i can't find the exact part but it was something like "We'd only known each other for six weeks and had been going out for two"
Two weeks and suddenly they are willing to risk their lives for one another? I don't think so. Especially considering she had just moved to a new country, started a new school etc.. you'd think they'd spend a little more time together than their sweet bonding moment of him carrying her to the hospital unconscious.
What ever
The characters in this book, were no more than what i expected for a modern YA Romance:
Protagonist
Pretty new girl, who everyone likes, gets with the popular guy that no one else can get with because of some really strong pull, gets kidnapped, is willing to sacrifice self for true love:

Love Intrest
out of this world attractive guy who falls head over heels for new girl, who has a secret past, who has a secret/secret power he reveals to the girl accidentally:

Bf's family
With the guardian of the lot, the grumpy one, the sweet one ect all of whom have some tragic past, and aren't actually related or are orphans (or both):

Friends
The nice one, The slut, and the boys

Protag's Dad
Who is a bit of a doozy, likes to eat out, watch sports and appear a little over protective. Who needs Mom's anyway, right?
(I'm not gonna put a picture here as all i could think of was Billy Burke)
I felt like the only real bad guys in this were in the middle of the book where Megan and Adam's love life became and issue. Obviously i am aware of The Knox, but they didn't seem so scary in this book. They will hopefully play a bigger part in the next two books.
Right, well that's me done for now, It's late and my typing is getting worse.
In summary, the book was ok, and I will read the next one, if only to see what Adam and Megan do about their forbidden relationship. Hopefully they don't have a mutant baby and name it after both their fathers/Guardians... Caleb and Fionn = Fioleb or Calonn, not so awesome.
3 stars for one skipped heart beat, a pretty cool cover and average writing.

I love the concept and mostly everything about it except the main character Megan. In my opinion she is to weak and needy in this book but I'm hoping she's better in the next.
This book is a total Twilight ripoff. Other people have done a much better job than I could of detailing exactly how much this book copies Twilight, so I will just talk about my personal least favorite part. At the end of the book, it looks like the love interest has died. The main character decides that obviously the best response is to just lay down and die because clearly she has nothing to live for anymore. At this point, she's known the guy for a few months, tops. Also, she has a Dad that she talked about being super close to at the start of the book, but she never considers him, and how her death will affect him at all when she's planning on dying to be with her "true love".
I dragged myself to finish it. It was that bad. Reading it I was all "I feel like I've read this before" and then I realized I did. In Twilight. Except, in Twilight it was at least fun to read. I really hated the way Leigh bogged it down with exposition and no character development. D:
At first, I was really interested in the storyline, and felt like the book (and series) had potential. But the more I got into Adam and Megan's relationship, the more forced the book felt. I really think that the author could have done a lot more with the history of the Marked/Order and the history of Ireland as a result, and she missed that opportunity to focus on a cheesy love story. It wasn't believable in the least, and I probably won't read the second in the series.

Carrier of the Mark was a bummer until it got to a little after the mid section, then it started getting some serious original content which helped the story along but it didn't really make up for the first half of the novel being disappointing. Nevertheless I managed to finish it without rolling my eyes way too much, and actually got interested in what was going on, I just don't think it should have taken me this long to get into it.
Carrier of the Mark is the story of Megan. She moves from the U.S. to Ireland and while she expects that this is going to be like the other hundred times she moved to a new home this time it seems to be different. She feels strangely at home in this new green land. She makes friends quickly and is drawn to the weird guy at school. His name is Adam DeRis. He's all a girl could want. But the DeRis family seem to be harboring a secret, and there are tales of all kinds out there about their little group. Are the tales truth? And how is she exactly connected to all of this?
The main problem with The Carrier of the Mark is that it's a Twilightrip off inspired novel. Girl moves in to a strange place with her single father, girl then meets this rather dark and weird boy and it's instantly interested in him, but boy is never interested in ANY girl in school so everybody thinks it will be a no go. But then Boy can't stand being apart from girl any longer and so gets together with girl, but there is some major obstacles in the way. Like for example, the boy's nature. Sound familiar? It did to me too. Only difference would be this girl ain't a klutz and she knows how to make some friends. Half way down the novel though we start getting original content which has to do with some kick ass magic. Of the mythology I approve. I don't want to get too into it in order to not spoil the good part of the book, I mean it's not like it's not something we've seen before these powers, but the story and intricacies behind the power are fairly original.
This book has a lot of glowing reviews, and I understand why, it has a good mythology and the romance is definitely steamy, but truthfully I was expecting so much more. The cover is amazing, and in person it looks even better. But a good cover and a steamy romance aren't going to be enough this time around. It's entertaining, it's a light read, but if you, like me, can't get the Twilight similarities out of your mind and just go with the flow are going to find this book a bit on the short coming side. If you don't notice it though you are scott free and are in for the ride of your life!

If you read this and enjoy it, you're probably a Twilight fan.
I couldn't even get past the point when her and the guy start talking. It was that bad.

So. Bad. So. Painful. To read.
I only give a book 1 star if I think a book does absolutely nothing right. So let's just cut this review short and I'll say that I didn't enjoy one part of this book.
