“Love is not a because, it's a no matter what.”

Ah, that wonderful feeling of reading a book by Jodi Picoult. Who very seldom disappoints me, by the way. This book was another one of hers that I enjoyed - ashamed to say that it's been lying on my shelf for over two years now! I do love unsolved mysteries. When the book started, I didn't think I would be getting one. Took me a little time to get into the book, especially with so many new characters being introduced in the beginning, but once that twist came I found it hard to put it down. I kept wanting to know more about what happened to Lia and Ruby and what happened that night in 1932! Also, I had no idea about Eugenics and the sterilization act passed in Vermont. This book was an eye-opener about what happened back then, and really, really hated Spencer Pike.
Although I did guess some of the story and how the past linked into the present, there were a few surprises in there as well. After being quite nervous about the ending, I was happy for the turn it took (didn't see that coming!), and I thought again - how cleverly did she hide those little hints inside the book!
Wish I had picked it up sooner but then I am glad I am not because I do love her books, and I don't want to run out of them. I will probably pick up her next unread one sooner rather than later.

Jodi Picoult is one of those authors where you usually know what sort of tale you're in for when you pick up one of her books. This one had a few more twists than I'm used to seeing from her, a few more threads woven together.

Some of her characters you like, some you don't and some just make you irritated (there's usually at least one character which I feel we're supposed to identify with that I just want to strangle - this time it was Ross). The supernatural elements seemed whimsical rather than frightening. Overall the story was engaging.

Found this in hardcover at a used bookshop and continued my quest to read everything Picoult has written. This is an older one, and you can tell because she sort of neatly wrapped everything up at the end (NO SPOILER!), which she doesn't really do anymore. However, it was a great read, and I learned all about eugenics in America and how Hitler used it as a model for the Holocaust. Love Jodi Picoult!

I started this book on 09/06/09. I finished this book on 09/19/2009.

This book was kind of weird for me. I enjoyed it but it was not my favorite of Picoult's. I enjoyed the in depth details and all the twist that it took. And although it's not my favorite of Picoult's, I still love her books. Can't wait to read the next one...

My favorite Jodi Picoult book! I love the ghost story aspect and the switching back and forth from past to present.

I loved this book from the first sentence & I learned so much from it. I didn't know anything about the Abenaki Indians or Eugenics in the 1930's.
