I can see what this book was trying to do. I think it worked for a lot of people. It just didn't work for me. I enjoy a book that teaches a lesson, that gives commentary on certain subjects, ect. But this just didn't do it for me.

I have to admit, I am still getting use to reading novels told in verses. Some have been hits and others not so much. I enjoyed reading The Emperor's Babe because I wanted to get an appreciation for Evaristo's earlier works. I also like that Evaristo writes about a space and time in history that I have little knowledge about and made it it accessible and interesting.

Some parts I had to re-read just to understand what was happening, but overall I enjoyed the freshness and feisty characters in this book.

I mean like... she kinda slapped??

How iconic do you have to be to write about a woman living in the THIRD century but with modern language? AND in verse? I don't think I have an answer.

No, but seriously, this was so incredibly fascinating. I loved the writing style, especially the dialogue and pretentious monologues. I loved the language the author used to paint this setting. I thought it was so well formulated and easy to follow along.

My only complaint is that I think it did drag at some points, or maybe I just wasn't interested.

But overall, SO well done omg. And definitely recommend. Now to write my essay.

Bernardine Evaristo’s cutting and sharp wit shines through during The Emperor’s Babe and her ability to approach the past in a way that is relatable to the present day reader is second to none. There is no doubt this is an incredibly refreshing and fun read. In spite of this, however, and while I really appreciate what this book is doing, it wasn’t quite to my taste.

The whole book is written in prose and uses
completely modern language mixed with
Latin. Reads a bit like a two thousand year old
bridget jones, hilariously funny while also
touching on themes of identity, class and
patriarchy. One of the most experimental
books I've ever read, really enjoyed it.

I really liked this! It could have been gimmicky but it wasn't -- it was smart and sharp and very funny. You love Zuleika, but you never pity her.
