Did not want to read about a pandemic. Good vs evil is kinda boring.

I was looking forward to this book, and while I enjoyed it, I think it didn't quite reach it's potential. Starts well, with the plague wiping out most of the world creating a sense of stress and despair. The reveal of the bad guys wasn't great though, and almost spoiled the story...surely the plague is enough without rogues destroying families as well. The end section redeemed the story, and set up for the second book. It's not a bad read, but nothing wow either.

At first, I was like, what is this?!! It took me a while to get into it. I almost didn't finish it but I kept reading because NR is one of my favorite authors. I just knew it couldn't stay SLOW forever right?! the end made want to read the next one. So on top the next....

Providing eerie parallels to the current pandemic, Nora Roberts has written a chilling end of the world series starter. With the Doom decimating world populations, the story is scarily possible. Luckily Roberts has laced her tale with fantasy, magical creatures and powers, villains and nightmare horrors. With her usual deft touch, the characters rapidly fill their outlines and become people you care about. The world building is slick and the story is a great set up for the rest of the Chronicles of the One.
A great read.

Have you every started reading a book and you feel like you have read it before? Well it turns out I had - it was called [b:The Stand|149267|The Stand|Stephen King|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1213131305s/149267.jpg|1742269] - except now with fairy dust added.

Year One appears to be fan fiction based on the Stephen King classic, but without the physiological damage. (Seriously, don't read The Stand in winter when everybody around you has a cold. I couldn't catch public transport for months). It has the same themes with a global pandemic, rebuilding communities and a battle of good verses evil. The addition of magical powers is just a side theme.

Notwithstanding the similarities, Year One is a good read and the first Nora Roberts/JD Robb book that I have really enjoyed. I'm a little surprised that I picked it up, but it promised to be different style from her other works. She is obviously a very versatile writer. I thought about giving it four stars but decided to take a star off for Stephen Kings royalties.

Not typically my kind of book but it was a fun read. The story moves at a good pace, so there didn't feel like any long or drawn out portions of the book. The ending was satisfying and left me wondering what happens next!

Fun twist on a genre I love reading. A mix of fantasy and dystopian. Very cool idea! I sadly wasn’t connected to the characters until right at the end. Will be reading the next one to see what happens next!
