I don't know where to start with this one. I'm actually a bit angry at this book. This story is totally unbelievable and strung together by happy coincidences. I know it's a fantasy story, but it starts out in the 'real' world, so as a reader I'd expect reactions and events that match with that world. There are just too many things that don't make sense: if people are dying by the billions within half a year, why are there no catastrophies like exploding nuclear plants, an all out war for food and water, massive outbreaks of cholera among the survivors (I mean, about 80% of the population is not burying themselves here). Why do the magic people just accept their powers without freaking out? And so on. Not to mention the overly obvious foreshadowing throughout the story. This series is clearly not for me. I'm tempted to give it just one star, but heck the performance in the audio book was fine, so there you go.
I'm not really a big fan of dystopian novels, or reading about the end of things asbwe know them. However I have now found the Trifecta of said novels. The Stand, Station 11 and now Year One. All three are very character driven stories. Like, could you imagine The Stand without Mother Abigail, Tom Moon or The Trashcan Man??
I think that what made this one unique is the rising of the Magicks, the Uncanny Folk, and the way the plague, called "The Doom" here, came about. I thoroughly enjoyed my first attempt at a Nora Roberts book as well, even knowing that most are not like this. The pacing and plot twists were on point making me not want to stop reading, and thinking about the book when not reading it. I only saw maybe one of the twists (but actually hoped I was wrong, I wasn't). I have book 2 of the series on my shelf and look forward to reading it!

Different than any other Nora Roberts book I've read. This book has great characters and an interesting story line. looking forward to book two.
I really enjoyed this, it was an unexpected change of pace from Nora Roberts and that's what prompted me to try it. An easy read with some great ideas and some really well written characters.
Year One explores a post-pandemic year in which most of the world's population has been decimated. Of those that remain some develop superpowers or magick. There is a saviour (of course) and their story will be told in the next of this series, which I am looking forward to.

A no brainer for me really, knew I would love it from the blurb. Weird virus - yes, post apocalyptic - yes, good people trying to survive - yes, strange and mysterious powers for some survivors - yes and to top it all off a prophecy about a newborn baby! This is not any where near as epic as some I have read and the writing is a little twee and awkward in places but it is absorbing and thrilling and I loved it!
There should be a trigger warning on this for pandemic anxiety.
It was a good story, however, I felt is was dragged out. I was getting bored with it.
This is the best Nora Roberts book I’ve read in a while, probably because it’s so different than her other novels. I’m looking forward to book 2!
Enjoyed this world’s end/urban fantasy. It was reminiscent of The Stand and Dies the Fire. Comfortably similar and yet it’s own entity. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
