Well written, easy to follow, but long sentences with many commas. Drama, romance, morality It is striking that adulterers are not described as the bad guys. 3½ stars.

Slow, but strong.

Read but it was a frustrating because people just don't do things like this.

I was surprised at how much I liked this book. After cliff-notes-ing through it in highschool, I finally took the chance to read it over vacation this year, and it is beautifully written! There were lots of great symbols. I'm also a very religious person, and this book made me reflect a lot on good & evil, church culture (the good and bad of it). I love books that make me think and this one did it for me!

Freaking Pearl.

Oh the hypocrisy within religious groups

Amazing message, but hard to convey with the older style of writing.

Hawthorn was soooo repetitive that he made the book a much harder read.

I read this back in high school and had wanted to revisit it after learning about the connection between Melville and Hawthorne. It's a lot better than I remember it, as I remember wanting to punch my English teacher in the face for making me read it. Still not my favorite book but it's good. The prose is pretty excellent and it explains a lot of the character of the US. I get why it's stuck around. I didn't finish it this time around because I know how it ends and I don't really care. I got what I wanted out of the reading.
