"Each a ghost, and awe-stricken at the other ghost. They were awe-stricken likewise at themselves; because the crisis flung back to them their consciousness, and revealed to each heart its history and experience, as life never does, except at such breathless epochs. The soul beheld its features in the mirror of the passing moment. It was with fear, and tremulously, and, as it were, by a slow, reluctant necessity, that Arthur Dimmesdale put forth his hand, chill as death, and touched the chill hand of Hester Prynne. The grasp, cold as it was, took away what was dreariest in the interview. They now felt themselves, at least, inhabitants of the same sphere." (181)

It’s clear the author was very censored by publishers. Every criticism of puritanical values and bigotry had to be followed up by a criticism of human nature to soften the blow. The introduction was a criticism of Hawthorne’s own colleagues and added little to the story for how much space it took up. It was hardly captivating and wasted time making a point that could’ve been done in a much shorter novel.

I'm glad I read this, since it's a classic and has an interesting theme and style. However, I can't say it was one of my top books. Although the writing style is excellent and some of the descriptions are lovely, it was very hard to engage with any of the characters and the 'introductory/ Custom House' section was long-winded and a little unnecessary.

I hated the beginning but loved it by the end. I hate Puritans. Hester is a girlboss and Dimmesdale is a damsel in distress. Pearl is a menace.

It is a curious subject of observation and inquiry, whether hatred and love be not the same thing at bottom. Each, in its utmost development, supposes a high degree of intimacy and heart-knowledge; each renders one individual dependent for the food of his affections and spiritual life upon another; each leaves the passionate lover, or the no less passionate hater, forlorn and desolate by the withdrawal of his object.

I surprisingly liked this, though I would have genuinely never picked it up if it wasn’t a mandatory class reading. The insanely long paragraphs were not it, however.
