my original plan was to read in publication order… but realizing I didn’t want the present ending to happen so soon, I took a quick detour and started this one. and ZOOMED through it. Royce and Hadrien are as funny as ever and just as endearing. Coming from mid point of book six of revelations, seeing these characters in state that’s only been hinted at is amazing. Recognizing the hints, fully (or in some cases partially) understanding the what would otherwise be throwaway sentences , I couldn’t adore this book more than I do.

If someone wants a reading order, I highly suggest stopping before getting   to book 5 of revelations and jumping over to this one. or you can do what I did and stop 200 pages from being done with revelations and hop over.

An excellent prequel to the Riyria Revelations. This book fills in some interesting backstory for the two friends.

Two very different men become such close friends was never going to be easy. But putting Royce Melbourne, untrusting hitman, together with Hadrian Blackwater, former gladiator and aimless drifter together on a job could be murder.

Couldn't get enough dose of Riyria, especially Royce Melborn. My affection for him is just huge. They are my most beloved and favourite couple ever. And Gwen, for me, is just such a shock of female character I ever read in any book. She is the first impossible not to fall in love with, the most perfect without ever being irritable protagonist female character ever. Usually they are annoying self righteous stubborn highty mighty prideful pain in the ass. It's hard to create one that is beatiful, strong and kind hearted without her become irritating. Michael did amazing job in composing and building such cool characters.

'The Crown Tower' by Michael J.Sullivan is the first book in the Riyria Chronicles series. It takes place before the Riyria Revelations, but it was written after. You can start with either. I started with this series.

This book tells how Royce and Hadrian met. They are the stars of the later series, and of course, when they first meet here, they seem like oil and water together. Unfortunately, knowing they team up later makes this all feel a bit inevitable. Hadrian is a soldier by trade and chivalrous, although tired of pointless, wearying fighting. Royce is a little more wary and cynical. They will eventually make a good team, but they start out distrustful. They are paired together to steal a magical item from the Crown Tower.

The action flows along easy enough, and I liked the book. There is a woman character named Gwen who is a prostitute. I wish she'd been something other than a prostitute because it seems like women in these kinds of books in these kinds of settings have limited choices. She is a good character though, as are Royce and Hadrian, and I'd like to travel a bit further on with them.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Orbit and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

The entire reason I got into the Riyria books was because of The Crown Tower. And it wasn't even out yet.
I saw this book online and loved the idea it presented, only to see that it wouldn't come out for a few months. Then I read Riyria Revelations and fell in love with them. Then I got The Crown Tower.
I was not disappointed by it. If anything, The Crown Tower made me love the characters even more than I already did from reading Riyria Revelations. It was well written, witty, and as fun as all of Sullivan's other books.
There was, unfortunately, one thing that did throw me off a bit, and that would be the fact that there are inconsistencies between the account of the Crown Tower incident in this book and the accounting of it in The Heir of Novron. But, where that did bug me a little bit as a fan of the Revelations series, I choose not to let it bother me - after all, The Crown Tower is still an awesome book that left me eagerly waiting for the release of The Rose and the Thorn.
