An enjoyable fantasy read with a wonderfully smart and sometimes stupidly brave main character. There are definitely Mulan vibes, but not the same storyline. Hoping the next book in the series is as good or better!

I finished this book in a day and for good reason. Given that I really haven’t read in years, which includes fantasy, I loved the world this book is in and the detail. Although there were parts where Ahdieh’s writing style is choppier, it was overall still an enjoyable experience. I didn’t realize this book was part of a duology (I think), which immediately makes me nervous to read the second book since I normally don’t enjoy the second book as much. But this book, I enjoyed, so I’ll try not to let my skepticism for the second book ruin my enjoyment of this one.

DNF - I was not connecting with the characters and the plot was at a stand still.
Also just because a girl dresses as a boy in an Asian country does not mean it is Mulan retelling... who pitched that?

I just find the plot so slow (which isn't really for me), but the romance is fast-paced; like after the river scene, they just become sort of lovers after that, i didnt get much build up in the story and i didnt get enough banters soooooo. They served thoooo, also i didn't expect the twist at the end but at some point i doubted the identity of Okami. And the scenes is so detailed i have to scheme through it because it bores the hell out of me
