What I loved about the book was the focus of the cult, and learning it's lore. Along with the nightmarish Old Friends that accompanied the cultists. I enjoyed reading the interviews, trying to piece together everything, watching as Kyle experiences out of body nightmares. That was all fantastic.
I think the reason why I didn't rate it four stars was because of its length. I love a long book, however, there were moments where it felt like the pages were turning but nothing was happening. And while I loved the concept, there wasn't much about the book that enraptured me.
It was, still, written very well, and the lore in the book was fantastic.

Was a great creepy slow burn at first, but then ground to a halt about 75% of the way through with around 100 unbroken pages of tedious exposition followed by a weird tonal turn into cheesy action movie territory for the ending.

DNF around 40% or so. Interesting idea and easy to read. But horribly paced and just drags after a bit. I’ve fallen asleep while reading this twice now. It’s time to move on lol

When people ask about terrifying horror books, I often think of Adam Nevill's ones.

I've read many horror books in the past 2 years, and the few I've read from this author are still ranking high.

It's not just how well researched Adam Nevill's books are, and how realistic the horror element is. It's his compelling writing, his pace, and his storytelling that make his books excellent reads.

Last days specifically has Blair witch project vibes, with the main characters having been tasked by a strange entrepeneur to go investigate and film the survivors of a cult that thrived in the 60s, and that ended in a mysterious homicide-suicide ritual after a few years.

There are many elements of horror to this story, and some parts really had me on my toes.

A beautiful read, a great story. I recommend this or any other Nevill novel to anyone who's looking for well-written and scary horrors!
