After being throughly disappointed by the last third of The Ritual, I was pleasantly surprised by The Last Days! This is the first book I’ve ever read that felt like a found footage film.
Just could not get into the story and I didn’t care at all for the writing. Didn’t do it for me.
I loved the premise and there were some great creepy scenes. The ending really threw me for a loop though and didn’t feel like it fit with the rest of the book.

An enjoyable spooky read. It wasn’t terrifying but it had potential to be pretty scary. I felt that it was could have been shorter and was repetitive and overly drawn out at times. I liked first half focused on making the documentary better than the second half which revealed what was really going on. The final chapter didn’t really land for me, I found it anticlimactic and not scary enough.
All and all though a descend book with good write, I’d read more by Nevill though with my expectations tampered.
Also he used the word “maelstrom” a lot, it was weird.

Dammm ! Super solid horror novel! The world building and gradual ramp up was so effective going from interview to interview. Followed by the wild craziness of the 2nd half. The author packed so much haunting imagery into his description and was able to set a spectacular mood. I really did not feel like the story was too linear as it did maintain an appropriate level of unpredictability.
Even for a long book I felt the pacing was appropriate digging into the interviews was a real highlight experiencing the fear from the unwrapping of the mystery.
I felt the gore was balanced and fit with the story!
At points things did feel a little repetitive going through similar plot points over again but I still greatly enjoyed the read!

I read this because I was reading Last Days by Brian evenson and the have shockingly similar concepts (with different executions, no pun intended) and the same title lol. So I was curious…
First half was good! Standard found footage type horror there, but I always love that kind of suspense and tension. It’s not easy to do in writing and I think Nevill did a good job initially. The lore started off intriguing and I thought the documentary filming scenes were excellent and painted a good picture in your minds eye. Genuinely scary too.
The problem was that it kept repeating that first scare over and over and repeated the same type of lore, as well. It got old by the end. By the last 100 pages I was just waiting to see what happened at the end . Ending sucked, totally goofed the landing.
I was over the main character pretty quickly, which is not good bc there were no stakes in the ending, I did not give a lick about anybody exceptMax , bc o actually felt for him and his traumatic past.
Still first half 10/10. Second half-straight to jail.

The first half of the book was the better half. Spooky, creepy things that come out at night are always going to do it for me. But the second half, especially the last like quarter, felt like a bit of a drag to a truly underwhelming ending. And the last bit of dialogue was pretty cheesy. Also, the book had some weird red-scare esque type of anti-communism that was hard to ignore. One of the characters compares Stalin and Mao to Hitler, which is just like a weirdly ahistorical take? Idk maybe I shouldn’t expect any better political analysis from the British. Overall, scary book kinda ruined by a cheap ending. Still giving it 3 stars bc the first half was really good.
