A pair of indie filmmakers set out to make a documentary about a notorious cult, as something insidious reveals itself and creeps into their lives. The exponential build up of the unique supernatural element was well integrated with the unfolding mystery of the cult, combining to create a dark and eldritch mystery. There are scenes of 'found footage' in book form that are incredibly convincing. Nevill has a knack for combining supernatural horror and eldritch horror and Last Days strikes a perfect balance between the two.

Bored. Didn’t like the stilted writing style. The “mystery” was interesting but waaay too drawn out. The horror was not specific enough to be scary but not Lovecraftian enough to be existentially terrifying. Didn’t care at all about the main character.

This book read like a movie. I read other reviews of some of his other works, and saw that one was intended to be a screenplay. After reading Last Days, and halfway through ritual, I feel that's his style. These could easily be made into films. It was the right book for me right now because I'm out of shows to watch, but this felt like a show to read if that makes sense.
