This book had a few moments of introspection for me, but I mostly found this man and his mom to be unrelatable as they lived lives so different from mine or anyone I know. I liked how they reignited my love of books and helped me appreciate reading in a different way, however, the books they read were enjoyable to them because they related to their lives bc of all the traveling they've done and also the cancer battle she was fighting, so I was bored with their discussions of the books they read. I thought the author talked too much about all her cancer-related issues and mentioned one too many times about her mouth sores and diarrhea which bogged down the writing and made it tedious to pick back up and read. This was not a favorite read of mine despite all the recommendations it got.

I first learned of this book on NPR, hearing Will Schwalbe talk about the time period that this book takes place and the remarkable woman his mom was. The book went on a list of books to read, years later I read the book. I enjoyed this book immensely, the relationship Will had with his mom, as well as the relationship others must have had with his mom. Their discussions of books reminded me of my own conversations with my mom and conversations I had with my grandma, "what are you reading?". His mom said, that if you are reading, you will always have something to talk about with people - how true. The book isn't necessarily a parallel story of what they are reading and the treatment that his mom is or isn't receiving - but how they come to talk about books while she is going through treatment, as they always have, but now with a mission of reading the same books and sharing their thoughts and feelings. I added many books to my "to read" list during this book, as well as reminisce about the books that I had read that they were reading as part of their book club. Although the book took me a while to get through, as I often would get another one that was on hold at the library during my reading, I don't think that Will and his mom would have minded that a bit.

Wow, I see why everyone has been raving about this book. What a great read and homage to books, family and just being kind.

Quarantine aint the time to read this. Found it a bit depressing. Did not complete.

A moving story of the relationship between a son and his mother and their relationships with books and reading. His mother was clearly an impressive and dedicated woman with an intellect to match. There were times when their discussions seemed artificial and a little contrived (do people REALLY talk about books like that?) but mostly interesting.

I loved this book! At first i thought the main character was a bit pretentious, but she is the exact opposite- kind, giving, generous, most of all humble. It's a great story of life, death, and dying with dignity.
And of course I liked the book discussions.
Thanks for the recommendation Andrea!

Um, I can't even read the first several sentences of the synopsis without crying. This will be a tough one.

Yep, just listened to the 2 minute intro. Already crying.
