This is a solid story that covers two topics that should be quite interesting - search and rescue dog behavior and life on the Oregon Trail. This first book in the Ranger in Time series is particularly apropos for Oregon Battle of the Books. This is a short one, which is my only complaint. I felt like some events were a bit glossed over to maintain brevity. At the same time, this could be a benefit to first-time chapter book readers and younger readers in general. Nothing but good stuff here, and the SAR aspects are well-covered and the wondrous dogs that do this work are represented in a way that showcases their amazing talents.

A great way to teach history for kids!
3 things I loved:
1-time travel (very magic treehouse-ish)
2-suspenseful chapters to keep you reading
3-Ranger!

I read this with Beck years ago and just read it again with Cole. They both liked it.

I think this is a super cute entry-level chapter book. The plot is fast-moving but not insipid, the pictures are cute and the storyline is engaging. A time-traveling Golden Retriever! What more can you want? And most importantly- the dog doesn't die- and added bonus since so much of children's literature seems to always throw in animal death. So perfect for even sensitive readers.

This was just an adorable novel about a dog helping a family in 1850. It was really sweet while also dealing with heavy topics like the death of parents.

Read this with one of my third graders. It’s a good read for dog lovers. Ranger is a good boy and I thought his relationship with Sam was great but the ending was a bit rushed for my taste.
