This book was very slow at the start, however while it took me almost a week to read the first fourth of it, I read the rest of the book in less than a day. Once the plot picked up, it RAN. I think the author did a great job with building the characters and world so that when the plot accelerated, I didn’t feel rushed or lost.
I really liked the magical element and the different plot twists throughout. The characters were full of dimension and depth. The book was quite long, but I didn’t want it to end!

I have been obsessed with Anastasia since the cartoon movie was release when I was a kid. This has book was basically mandatory for me to read. I was extremely invested in this story from page 1. Now I'm just sad that the real Anastasia missed out on this HEA for herself.

To be honest, I was not sucked into this book until about 60% and it’s a looooong book. I kept waiting for SOMETHING to happen and it seemed to be dragging.
But when the SHTF… man it hits hard and i was then glad for all the build up in the beginning of this book. I really felt close to these characters and Rusya in a way that I wouldn’t have been if the build up had not been so great.
So if you’re feeling iffy and still in the first 50ish%. Power through because it pays off IMO.
I’ve seen people say this is a “smutty Anastasia retelling”. I don’t agree with that at all. Are there a couple spicy scenes? Yes, but it is not a smutty book by any means. The couple does not even get together until probably 70% through the book. I’d call it a historically inspired fantasy with a romance subplot. If you don’t go in expecting a filthy romance novel (which quite a few seem to) I think you will enjoy it more.
As a child, Anastasia was my favorite princess movie and I’ve always had a little obsession with her so I was so excited when I heard this book was in the works. I’m honestly glad Sophie didn’t just turn it into a steamy romance and instead really took her time researching and giving us this twist on our beloved Anya. I mean.. vampires?! I did not expect that but I am here for it.

I enjoyed this book. Incorporating actually Russian history with the beloved cartoon and adding a new twist made this really enjoyable.
While reading, I thought the book was about 200 pages too long but once I finished, I understood the reason for following Anastasia through childhood.

I enjoyed the twist of the ending with time travel but if Rasputin and Anastasia survived and she brought them back in time, I wish she would have also brought Damien back as well.
It would have been great that the two of them arrived 200 years earlier before they met in the meadow and had to together their people together to fight Rasputin on the mountain. It didn’t make it believable that she was able to turn “old” Damien to join her so quickly in a time of his fathers loss with only a recap of the future and a fire dance.
Overall the book was really enjoyable.

Me impresiona sobremanera la cantidad de laburo que se puso en este libro. Se nota que Sophie Lark hizo su trabajo para lograr que esta historia quede lo más históricamente correcta posible (dentro de los parámetros razonables para una novela fantástica, claro está).
Esto es muy importante para cualquiera que esté interesado en leerlo: Es una FANTASÍA HISTÓRICA, no un romance. Si bien hay romance, obviamente, no es la característica principal de la historia. La novela se centra mucho en los hechos históricos, la parte fantástica y el crecimiento y evolución de Anastasia.
Procedamos con las opiniones. Vamos por partes.
Empiezo destacando los aspectos positivos:
1. Precisión histórica: Como ya mencioné, este libro refleja un trabajo de investigación gigante. La autora captura muy bien el ambiente de la Rusia Imperial y presenta detalles históricos muy precisos, dentro de lo razonable siendo que es una adaptación LIBRE Y CON ELEMENTOS FANTÁSTICOS, que permite sumergirse por completo en esta época.
2. Elementos fantásticos: El mundo fantástico dentro de Anastasia se asimila con mucha naturalidad en la historia. Resulta creíble y aporta mucho color a la novela.
3. Rasputín: Sin duda, uno de los mayores aciertos del libro es el personaje de Rasputín. Sophie logra retratarlo de manera magistral y nos muestra un Rasputín complejo, lleno de matices, cautivador y misterioso.
4. LAS ILUSTRACIONES!!!! Todas las ilustraciones que acompañan la narrativa son simplemente preciosas. Embellecen las páginas, ayudan a agilizar la lectura y a visualizar mejor los escenarios y personajes.
Sin embargo, a pesar de todo eso hubo algunas cosas que me hicieron restarle puntos y que (lamentablemente) no pude pasar por alto. Básicamente las razones por las que este libro tiene tres estrellas y no cuatro.
1. Es MUY largo: El principal punto negativo de Anastasia es que tiende a extenderse más de lo necesario. La trama podría haberse desarrollado de manera más ágil y concisa, lo que habría mantenido un ritmo más dinámico y emocionante.
2. Escenas y descripciones innecesarias: En ocasiones, el libro presenta escenas y descripciones MUY EXTENSAS que no aportan mucho a la trama principal, lo que puede hacer que la lectura se sienta un poco pesada.
3. Personajes principales planos: Aunque la historia está llena de personajes interesantes (Rasputín sos mi fav), Anastasia y Damien, que son los PROTAGONISTAS, podrían haber estado un pelín más desarrollados (especialmente si tenemos en cuenta la longitud del libro). Sentí que la personalidad de ambos y el desarrollo es como un poco superficial y plano, lo que dificulta una conexión más profunda con ellos. De todas maneras me gustó la química entre ambos y cómo se desarrolla su relación (slow burn - maybe TOO slow - y enemies to lovers, lo que toda chica bonita quiere).
En definitiva, es un buen libro, muy bien escrito, bien pensado, peeeero podría haber suprimido tanta escena innecesaria y tanta descripción. Si no les jode esto último, lo van a disfrutar mucho. Lo recomiendo a los amantes de los retellings y las fantasías históricas, así como a todos los que estén interesados en la historia de Anastasia Romanov.
