The world building in this is like woah. Though I still don’t think I fully understand the magic system 😅
Sophie Lark 100% delivers in her slow burn fantasy retelling of Anastasia.
"I'm not a hero. But when I'm with you I believe I could be."
Sophie is an absolutely amazing storyteller, and I was invested in every single moment in Anastasia and Damien's lives from start to finish. Their respective families and friends too. Plus, this is the story of Anastasia so there is the deeply woven mystery of Rasputin.
"I lost my hope...and I found it again in you."
You do not want to miss out on Anastasia! The emotions, the action, the magic and the love. Sophie delivered on all of it.

I really enjoyed the first half of this book. I liked the changes to the story from the original Romanovs and the introduction of the fantasy elements. But the last 25% of the book were frustrating. Deus ex machina and cheesy teenage love story. It was like an entirely different book.

I did not expect to fall in love with this book the way I did. I’m definitely a history lover and a fantasy junkie but not so much a romance gal. I thought I’d like it, sure. But I was entranced. The blend of history and fantasy was seamless and I’m here for it.
At the same time it made me sad because I know the actual history. So I could feel my heart breaking when the story deviated from history because I know where and what the end actually is.
This follows the story of Anastasia, last of the Romanov princesses and youngest child of Russia’s Tsar Nicholas. It takes us thru her childhood all the way to the beginnings of the Bolshevik revolution. In the shadows lurks Rasputin, whispering in the ears of the Romanov family, bewitching them with his uncanny ability to heal their sickest child. But in this version, magic is in the air and in the people. How will that change the outcome of history?
A love story, a tragedy, and a ray of hope all rolled into one.
I absolutely loved the artwork in this book. I felt like it really added to the story.
I also thought the inclusion of not only a recommended reading playlist but the inclusion of suggestions about where to listen to which song in the actual book was inspired. It can change the way you feel about certain scenes, help you feel the emotions of the characters.

too long and idc enough about anyone here to try to finish it
Not interesting enough to actually commit to finishing the book
I think I liked this book?
I hesitate to say this because it look me awhile to get through it. Not get into it. To get through it.
This happy-ending retelling of Anastasia was full of themes of magic and love; there’s an animal sidekick (!); a relationship based on connection and friendship; and is very beautifully written; bonus points for the artwork in the book
