What a beautiful and heartwarming story of how a zoologist took care of an injured red-tailed hawk and how she raised chickens as her own. A long story to read aloud but contains many pictures and facts throughout the story.
informative
slow-paced
I did not think I'd cry, but I definitely teared up about how sweet Kara and Sunshine are. I don't know where to begin on how much I loved this book. It tells the story of not just one, but two unlikely friends that come together to build a family. This book teaches about finding community in unlikely places. The photos are incredibly adorable and great for kids and adults of all ages that like animals.
What an interesting story. I think this is a very cool read, and would probably be really interesting for a curious or nature/science-minded child - but I also think it's written in a way that makes it a little bit difficult for young children to understand (talk about fertile vs. infertile eggs, for example, and use of other specific terms). There's a glossary at the end, and I'm all for teaching kids technical stuff, but I think there's a bit of a gap between the way the book is presented and the way it reads (which is just a little bit blunt). A really nice (true) story, though!
