This is more than a three star rating, honestly, but for me it wasn't quite a four. I'm still unsure as to where exactly I would rate this, so maybe I'll get back to it. This one was much better than A Feast for Crows and with many more interesting characters, but I still maintain that they would have been better books if the characters had been mixed together and it made into two parts with maybe the second part of this book by itself as its own separate installment, but I'll see if I feel the same after I read it.
For some reason, I haven't been enjoying Martin's writing style as much as I did when I read the first three books, but this one read much better than the last. Or maybe these characters are just more interesting, I don't know. The point is that this one was much easier to read than the last. And like I said, full of the more interesting and less annoying characters.
I also appreciate how Martin ended this one. I'm (obviously) reading A Dance with Dragons in two parts, rather than the combined one that you used to be able to get but I couldn't find anywhere to buy. I also read A Storm of Swords in two parts, and part one ended so abruptly that I couldn't not continue because it felt as if someone had literally just sliced the book down the middle instead of finding a good, comfortable place to end it. This wasn't the case in ADWD. The ending was very natural and a good cliffhanger-esque place to stop.
I don't think my heart was fully in this after being so disappointed with AFFC, so maybe if I hadn't still been so pissed off with Brienne and gone into this book with a more open and anger-free mind I would have enjoyed this more. There were a few plot points that I didn't enjoy so much, but seeing everything finally start to weave together, at least as far as Dany is concerned, was really enjoyable to read about. I think I'll definitely enjoy part two more and I'm looking forward to continuing on with this series again.

It took me ages to finish this book and I had to take breaks reading other things in between. Due to this, I struggled to keep up with the narrative a little. Martin expects you to have a very very long memory when it comes to come stuff. I found myself flicking backwards trying to figure out who the hell people were and why certain people were in certain places or doing certain things. It took me a while to get my head around but I think I figured it out in the end.
I also struggled with the fact that the narrative ran alongside Feast rather than after. It was very detached from Feast so I struggled to place these events in the timeline of that book. Dance never really refers to the events of Feast, except for with the Ironborn, which confused me more because it seems like all of the stuff with Asha etc in this book is set after the stuff in Feast! Arghhhhh!
Obviously the story isn't complete and I need to read part 2. Maybe then it will make more sense. I thoroughly enjoyed it regardless. I love the world and the characters that he's created and would put up with any amount of confusion to read their stories!

This is definitely the instalment of A Song of Ice and Fire that I have enjoyed the least. For the first time, the book felt like a trudge that I was finishing a bit more to say I had than because I actually wanted to. Well, that's an exaggeration, I enjoyed aspects, but for me the story has reached a level of spoiler-dom that reading it is no longer enthralling. Yes, I liked the ridiculous situations that Tyrion seems to find himself in, and I like the politics and the dragons, but I'm just losing interest and getting tired overall now.
Phew!! I was apprehensive about reading this one after finishing 'the book that shall not be named' and really concerned that George had completely lost his way.
Thankfully he is (almost) back to his best. This volume spills shocking secrets and has more twists and turns than a twisty turny thing.
I'm now off to start part 2. Hopefully that will continue in the same vein...
