There are some good ideas but the amount of usage of the word "VCR" and the suggestions to print out emails are really not helpful anymore. The basics are quite logical and many things came naturally to me, but the point at which it wasn't helpful anymore was the actual application. And the application to modern means of communication.

Practical advice that anyone can act on, in spite of the apparent biases of the author (who has obviously hung out in rarified circles far too long to realize that most people are not CEO's ... you just have to grin and bear bits of wisdom like "keep lists in all the locations where you might need to access them, including your second home and your boat" (I'm surprised he didn't include "private jet" on the list!) At any rate, the tips on productivity are useful for anyone. My only quibble - not even enough of one to cost this book a star - is that he puts so much faith in list-making that if you can't quite keep up with all the lists you could be making, you might feel defeated before you even start. But his "next action" orientation saves the day - even if you can't list them all, just focusing on your next actions with regard to each project you have on your plate can have an enormously calming and productive effect.

Good system, but the book was wordier than it needed to be.

The author seems pretentious and self-righteous… to no fault of his own, this book was written 20+ years ago and in the age of social media and smartphones much of this advice is not applicable. Quite possible the worst book I’ve ever read.

Really useful models, tips and examples to change your thinking for getting things done.

Dry but extremely motivating. My husband and I are both implementing his system for the next three months to see if it makes a difference in our productivity.

Definition of an action item or a project - "anything personal or professional, big or little, of urgent or minor importance, that you think ought to be different than it currently is and that you have any level of internal commitment to changing" (26).

My action/project list was long - 202 items for the initial collection. I now have all of those processed into projects or next action lists.

I especially liked this guideline on page 255:
"Why are we doing this?"
"What will it look like when it's done successfully?"
What is the very next step to work toward success?

I aim to keep up with the system and see what difference it makes in my life.
