I watched the movie before reading the book (the movie motivated me to read it).
Both the movie and the book should be treated as two separate entities. I liked some and disliked some stuff from each and they both had major differences.
The politics felt shallow and superficial in how it was explored in this book (considering it takes place in an ideal world with less bigotry?)and the writing got too fanfictiony in some places. However, the cheesy romance was nice to read. It was a good detox from reality to escape into a somewhat fantasy world where everything works out fine politically.

Initially I read this right after watching the movie two times, but then I was being carried by the movie! That all changed on page 85 and then from there I was obsessed! I quite literally could not put it down and if I did it was only because I had to. This book was so emotional, so personal and just created such needed sentiments of hope and queer healing for me. It really will always have a special place in my heart (so much that I’m ordering another artistic copy) yea that good.

An absolute delight in a (in my opinion) sea of cringey romantic fiction. I normally hate romance books, but McQuiston writes in a way that is so authentic and wildly entertaining that Red, White, and Royal Blue has shot up to my top 10 books I've ever read. Highly recommend!
