This book would have been better if they had narrowed down the side plots and fleshed out the main storyline. Good pacing, but ultimately uninspired plot and lackluster story
This weekend, I dove into *A Friend in the Dark* that I got through Amazon First Reads. For those who don’t know, Amazon Prime members can get one free book each month, and I always love picking something at random. This month’s choice did not disappoint!
The story revolves around revisiting an old college crush and the drama that come with it. It will make you think twice before rekindling old flames. Alongside this, the book expertly weaves in themes of grief, the impact of divorce on a family, and the dark secrets that often lurk behind closed doors.
If you’ve ever thought about revisiting a past romance, this book will give you plenty to ponder.
This is your standard thriller – lots of twists and turns, unreliable narrators, and wild moments that would almost certainly never occur sequentially in the real world. It's fun though, once I started it I was burning through it and read in an afternoon.

**SPOILERS**
This book is so intense for no reason.
Lonely divorcée friend requests a college crush and his wife ruins her life for 48 hours in a half assed attempt to escape from sex slavery. These events all could have been avoided if the divorcée had had a single conversation with her best friends.
Also her husband is divorcing her because he assumes he’s kinkier than his dead dad but, guess what? He reads his parents’ smut and turns out his dad is also kinky! So he can stay married to his wife.
Also who tried to set Eden’s house on fire? Who snuck into the basement window? Was Alistair murdered or was that all a coincidence? Who texted Eden at the restaurant while Olivia was with her?

With such a short book I really expected a fast paced thrilling story, but after getting through 25% of the book and learning nothing more than that Eden is lonely and divorced, I tapped out.
What did I just read? I wouldn't call this sensual, but it does have some fantasy but extremely mild, closed door and only in the first few chapters. I wouldn't say it's suspense, but it does make you wonder what grown ass woman thinks this naive and falls in love literally with one text message. I wouldn't call it a thriller because it's very predictable. Overall, I was super confused about how any of these adults ended up in any of these situations.
Ohh this book. It took me a bit to get into it, admittedly. Eden was a frustrating lead character - naive, easily manipulated, and a bit whiny. But about 35% in, I was totally hooked.
Eden's relationship with Justin - a flame sparked after 20 years - was a bit sad but it was also so very entertaining. Eden was clearly desperate for some positive affirmation and fell hook, line and sinker for Justin's charm. Red flags were jumping out at every corner and I was shouting at Eden through the book - ARE YOU STUPID?! But sometimes it's just so fun to be so invested in a protagonist!
I also loved all the little nuggets strewn throughout. Had someone been in Eden's house? Was someone following her? Was something more sinister going on? When the book takes a turn for the darker world of BDSM, I was truly enthralled! I didn't know who or what to trust and kept questioning everything.
While some of this novel was a little bit predictable for the experienced thriller reader, it was such a stellar ride. I had so much fun seeing how everything fit together, experiencing the character growth, and watching the train wreck unfold.
This is one of those books that you can totally binge in a sitting or two, and I definitely recommend doing just that! Once I was hooked, I really didn't want to put it down!
