It's a Lifetime thriller film in book form. That's not necessarily a bad thing though and I had a good time!
This was okay. It had some good twists but honestly I was just bored the whole time, and it’s not even that long of a book! Maybe it’s because I didn’t care about the characters at all or what the MC was doing was just so outlandish and unbelievable for the timeline? It just didn’t do it for me.

I'll admit that at the beginning of this book I was annoyed by Eden. All the things I read as red flags and each turn where she wasn't protecting herself- but somewhere in the middle of this story I found myself needing to know what was coming next-rather than watching another TV show - and that is a marker of a good book in my realm. This book went in a direction I almost saw coming (but not really at all) it was a quick and easy read that kept me on my toes.

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing this book, with my honest review below.
A Friend in the Dark was an enjoyable thriller, quickly dropping the reader into the thick of the mystery, which was fairly standard in premise, if you read many thrillers, but certainly with a unique twist that keeps the reader glued.
Eden is newly separated (soon to be divorced) from her husband Dave, with their daughter Ava freshly out of the house attending college. This stirs Eden’s memories of her own college life experience and her almost was with bad boy Justin. And while it was clear to me that he was a classic ‘f**k boy’, to quote the current jargon, what wasn’t clear were why so many bad things kept happening to Eden after she got reacquainted with Justin.
This isn’t going to be a genre changer for thriller lovers, but it’s a great way to pass the time. For those wanting to dip their toes in the thriller waters I think this would also be enjoyed (maybe especially by those reminiscing ‘what if’ as they get older. This should stop any regrets).

Eden Miller’s life is about to change drastically. In route to drop off her daughter at college, she’s looking forward to becoming an empty nester until her husband blind sides her with a divorce. Shocked by the news, her daughter is also barely speaking to her. Sad and wanting to escape what’s to come, Eden impulsively sends her college crush a friend request. She starts to reminisce on the night twenty three years ago that changed everything. It closed the door on her college crush Justin and opened the door to her husband, Dave. When Justin accepts her friend request they immediately began messaging. With every exchange he begins awakening things she didn’t know she had inside her. But something is off. When Eden realizes Justin knows too much, she has to snap out of her fantasy and figure out who Justin really is.

This was a crazy read. It literally started off with a drunk friend request and whewwwww did it go from there. lol I definitely binge read this book and I don’t regret it. Eden is the main character and though I don’t hate her…..she just….existed. She really didn’t have any personality traits. The point of view switch wasn’t a good transition and the plot lacked….something….I can’t put my finger on it. If you’re looking for a little spice and a hot mess in general, read this. 😂
I just feel meh about this book. The characters were … a bit boring and predictable and… gullible. Not awful, but not great or even very good.
This was a first reads for me, I would have been pissed if I spent real $ on it lol. The story was very much lacking, lots of suspense but I kept asking myself “why” about every little thing, the characters were so not realistic. And last but not least: my least favorite trope i-have-an-abusive-husband-let-me-pawn-him-off-on-someone-else. Ie: the last Mrs Parrish, Perfect Ruin, etc.
Giving it 2 stars because it was a good pace but overall…not a good book

This book would have been better if they had narrowed down the side plots and fleshed out the main storyline. Good pacing, but ultimately uninspired plot and lackluster story
This weekend, I dove into *A Friend in the Dark* that I got through Amazon First Reads. For those who don’t know, Amazon Prime members can get one free book each month, and I always love picking something at random. This month’s choice did not disappoint!
The story revolves around revisiting an old college crush and the drama that come with it. It will make you think twice before rekindling old flames. Alongside this, the book expertly weaves in themes of grief, the impact of divorce on a family, and the dark secrets that often lurk behind closed doors.
If you’ve ever thought about revisiting a past romance, this book will give you plenty to ponder.
