The Tenant of Wildfell Hall started out with such intrigue...who is this mysterious woman living in the abandoned estate with her young son? The point of view from a local young man's perspective was well done. When the point of view switched to the 'mystery woman' the novel became a parody of Gothic Romance and could not redeem itself. The characters are very one-dimensional. It would have been far more interesting if Anne would have made this a true epistolary novel instead of the tedious detail from her 'diary' which did not work.

Well, I've come to a self-determination and that is that I just don't like contemporary romance regardless of what decade it was written in. Because we may see this as a classic but at the time it would have been contemporary.

Part of the reason I don't like contemporary romance is the characters or authors will just straight up ignore red flags just to make the story end happily. He almost killed Frederick! For a woman he had absolutely zero claim to. And how insulting of him to try and pretend he didn't go to the house at the end to see her... You had no other good reason for being that far away from home, my man.

I very much enjoyed this novel and I thought the themes covered were both interesting and brave of Anne Bronte to write about for her time!

I can see why my younger sibling loves this book. A heartrendingly relevant story on domestic abuse, double standards, and alcoholism. I'll admit the "novel within a novel" section did throw me, but it does say a lot on how taboo a topic domestic abuse is then and now. It felt astounding how many issues feel familiar to the modern day despite being written in the 19th century. Furthermore, I thought the characterization was on point, where each person felt unique in their vices, virtues, and voice. The writing was also great, with some later portions in particular really standing out in how memorable and interesting they were. I hope more people give this book a chance.
