A super fast paced read. It dives straight in to the action, while building a solid picture of who Yasmine is. Kalta bursts into her life and brings a reckless energy that may turn Yasmine's world on its head. Werewolf meets Witch mate, while they both battle with their own demons and learn how to lean on one another.
They both have to face who they are and decide who they want to be.
It's a sweet romance.
I had some issues with the plot. I wasn't sure on how much time passed at one point. From Yasmine's pov it seemed like it had been days or weeks, yet from Kalta's it was only a day or two. It seemed inconsistent in places. I am wondering if this was on purpose though, as it could definitely play into how lost and disjointed Yasmine was.
Kalta was a lot. She seemed very over the top and i had a hard time liking her. After thinking about it though I realised 1. I don't need to like everyone. 2. She has some amazing character growth and if she didn't start out a little over the top and a little shady, we may have missed that.
Overall an easy read, a sweet romance with two women finding their place in the world. I loved the magic and the red wolf history. I really liked the way Yasmine began to understand her mum and cousin by the end.
Trigger warning: mentions an eating disorder and binging, plus self harm.

Adore this premise for a wolf shifter romance and so despite some usual hangups I have about the genre (and insta love), I was really excited to read this! I think initially the history/status of red wolves was incorporated decently into the world and Yasmine's personal struggles. I think her internal conflict and how that manifests was probably the more compelling part of the story. Shiara was a good side character as well I really liked her.
I think I struggled the most with how the plot and romance/fated mates scenario was executed. It was just alright for the most part, but unfortunately I didn't connect to Yasmine and Katla as a couple much. I'm not against a fast burn but I wasn't really feeling the tension and chemistry. Maybe if the prose was stronger? I'm not sure but this was very readable regardless. I also don't think I felt much about Katla until late in the book. I don't know if this would've benefited from being longer or not. Though I probably would've enjoyed seeing this world and story built up and fleshed out more.
All that said, this was close to being a 3.5-4 ⭐ until the end where some of the major conflict seemed to be forgotten? Maybe I missed something and skimmed over it but that did take me out of what would've been a more emotional ending.

Can a body of work somehow be too short for its own good?
I enjoyed the prose and the way Jerée was able build such an atmospheric setting with compelling lore. However, I think where A Wolf Steps In Blood falls short is that it IS a novella! 😭
I felt myself yearning for more everytime things got juicy, but knew I wouldn’t get it because of the page count. This honestly had more than enough potential for things to be explored in a longer format!
Additionally, because this used the fated mates trope, it meant that the romance moved at a break neck speed. Though the swiftness of their bond is briefly acknowledged, the story still suffered from pacing issues and unexplained plot elements.
I’m hoping that Jerée returns to this world for a full-length novel because it deserves it.
Graphic: Gore, Self harm, Blood
Moderate: Animal death, Body horror
Minor: Sexual content, Murder
I knew this was gonna be fast paced being a novella but it was a little too fast and confusing for me
