I did not enjoy Jerée’s first novel at all, so, while this one intrigued me enough to give their books another shot, I was skeptical going in. I’m very glad that I took the chance because this one ended up really working for me, despite the fact that it turned out to be quite different from what I expected.
Stylistically, it isn’t written like your typical PNR, and I really liked the fresh feel for the subgenre. The soft, luscious prose treats these 2 sad, hurt Black women gently, in stark contrast to their life experiences thus far.
The romance is fast burn and fast build, which I suspect won’t work for a lot of readers. While it was admittedly jarring at first, ultimately I was fine with the insta- nature of Yasmine and Kalta’s bond 1) for utility given the book’s novella length and 2) because of the whole werewolf fated mates business.
Much of the plot stuff, including the big prophecy resolution, happens because of ~magic reasons~. That the prophecy plot line is underutilized is my only significant complaint, but, now that I’ve finished the book, it’s clear that the it was never supposed to be the focus. This is a deeply character-driven story about grief and healing and acknowledging hurt and being afraid of taking up space and the safety of a community who cares. Yasmine’s arc, in particular, of feeling disconnected from her wolf and consequently disconnected from her ancestors is painfully beautiful, and I relished the last few lines in which Kalta finally connects with the wolf pack.

this was so fun, i loved the romance and loved the writing style
i did struggle with the pacing, scenes changed so quickly and stayed at certain parts a page too long so it got a little confusing
but i had FUN and that’s all that matters
i can’t wait to read more from this author!!
