This book is an ode to finding yourself. The themes of unconditional love, family and community, and personal growth resonated so deeply with me. Watching Yasmine and Kalta find themselves and each other was so healing, like I can follow them back to myself.

"I was wrong before. Kalta doesn’t know how to live in a body. Neither of us do."

The second half of this book was good. I kind of waffled on DNFing throughout the first half but i’m glad I kept going! The ending was beautiful.

Note: this was a very blood-heavy book. Not my jam, but i’m trying to broaden my reading horizons 😅🩸

For the most part, I really enjoyed A Wolf Steps in Blood. Both Yasmine and Kalta were incredibly interesting characters, and the world of the book was both fascinating and engaging. It was also very well-written, with a few stunning turns of phrase that I adored.
My problem is one that is really just my own, and that’s that I discovered that I really just do not care for fast burns. I ended up really liking Yasmine and Kalta’s relationship, but it happened too quickly for my tastes. However, this was acknowledged in the content warnings and tropes page, so I can’t really fault the book for that!
Overall, very enjoyable!

Turns out I prefer “fast-burn” romances, who knew. None of the boring “will they/won’t they” that drives me nuts, just off to the races.

The world the author built was super fun yet simple and easy to imagine the characters in. A little bloody, a little dark, check the trigger warnings, but very beautiful and engaging. I really enjoyed the hopeful note the story ended on.

A queer romance that I would recommend to all romance fans and to people who maybe are tired of predictable, trope heavy hetero romances.

This was a really interesting shifter/magic system. It's brutal and visceral in many ways. Which isn't standard fare for a sapphic book. But I think it might be standard fare for Tamara Jerée and I am certainly not mad at it. It definitely grounds you in their reality.

A common theme of the werewolf story is the reluctant wolf. And Yasmine certainly falls into that trope. But it does present in a unique way. Then there's Kalta, and she is obsessed with her magic. Her magic and Yasmine's wolf.

Weaving the werewolf story in with endangered red wolves and black people in the American south was stunning. It was tragic and aching. And not an easy read, but well worth it.

There's not too many black shifter lesbian romance out there. Though this was short, it was super cute and the spicy scenes kept coming iykwim. I think the plot was very detailed for a short novel but it was engaging, nonetheless. One of my favorites for sure.

This was super cute!  I saw a couple of people say "insta love" which is true, but in a gated mates novella, kinda comes with the territory.  Would love to see some more short stories from this cast.
