I was slow getting into this book, and then I felt like I couldn’t read it quickly enough by the middle. WOW! What a great read. An ending that is open to interpretation… a vibrant cast of characters… plenty of Shakespeare quotes… I really enjoyed this and can’t wait to discuss it further in book club!

the moon, and the stars … as if we were villains on necessity; fools by heavenly
compulsion; knaves, thieves, and treachers by spherical predominance; drunkards,
liars, and adulterers by an enforc’d obedience of planetary influence; and all that
we are evil in, by a divine thrusting-on!”

Devo spendere due parole per la traduzione ignobile del titolo di questo libro in italiano, che dimostra che il traduttore non aveva capito niente del libro. Perché prendere un libro che parla di Shakespeare, che ha una copertina ispirata all'Amleto e come titolo un passo di Re Lear e trasformarlo in 'Non è colpa della luna' dovrebbe meritare come minimo una condanna. E poi dite che chiunque può fare il traduttore...

so.. it was definitely something – perhaps even one of my favourite books. i constantly think about it and i can’t recall when literature last made me feel like that.
from the beginning – “if we were villains” is full with dark academia theme and the story’s about group of acting students. what i really like is that the characters’ personalities lean more towards archetypes than fully fleshed-out personas. when i think about them, the term "caricatured" comes to my mind, and while some may see it as a downside, i find that it complements the theatrical theme very well – they are, after all, defined by the roles they play.
delving deeper into theatrical aspect – it’s amazing how the author made shakespeare’s plot so thought-provoking. he’s some kind of centre of all the events. let me quote:
«”do you blame Shakespeare for any of it?”
The question is so unlikely, so nonsensical coming from such a sensible man, that I can’t suppress a smile. “I blame him for all of it.”»
also, correct me if i’m wrong or just think too much, but am i the only one who sees theatrum mundi concept in all of it? the world as a stage and characters just playing in it. i consider it intriguing topic to think about.
of course, “if we were villains” isn’t flawless – there are elements i didn’t like. yet, the engaging and addictive plot outshadows all these flaws.
