I just could not get into this book. Of course wanted to read it forever - it's a classic, but reading it now, I wonder if it would have eve been published today. [Side bar, the one more recent novel I could compare it to was the My Brilliant Friend series, which I also struggled with as dragging and boring. Which funnily enough started watching the series to try and rev me up to finish the last book, and I may have forgot, in the first book, they get a copy of Little Women and love it - so potentially My Brilliant Friend wanted to be similar to Little Women. Back to Little Women which] I found it dragging and boring and dreaded reading it - but of course had to finish. The last quarter was okay - so maybe it really could have cut out the rest. That was my issue, it was just a long family saga without a lot of plot and was disjointed as it randomly skipped over years and just gave seemingly random snippets of story. I also didn't really believe the characters. And from what I heard before reading it myself, everyone loves Jo as this free spirit and independent woman back in the day, but in the end (small spoiler) she kind of just gets married and raises kids - when she constantly says this isn't what she wanted the whole book. It kind of nauseated me, I'm not sure what so many love about it.

When I was younger, I loved this unreservedly. Now I find a lot of things about the ending very problematic. And oh, the moralizing!
I find that I really enjoy the style of 1800's writing. Sort of reminiscent of "Great Expectations" in its writing style. There is something about it that I just find so elegant and classy. The girls were so lovable. I had a good time reading about them bonding the way they did, while also fighting like normal siblings do. I was surprised that I'd never before read this book, or seen any movie adaptation, so I gave it a go and I was glad. I was even glad that there was no central conflict. It was just a "slice of life" as it was back then. Loved the lessons about how people with different incomes live totally different lifestyles. Overall pretty wonderful. :)

Actual rating: 3.5 stars
I know I keep giving this rating to everything, but it's so useful. I don't really know how I feel about this book yet. If I was rating the first part, I'd say: a new favorite! 5 stars. Unfortunately, the second part makes that impossible (a feeling I'm not alone in). I may yet bump this up to 4 stars, but I need to sit with it a bit first.
