Plot: Follows a house party before the host is about to give birth. The spunky aunt invites Stephen Fairfax-Lacy to set up Helene with but Stephen and Lady Beatrix Lennox, a girl taken in by the aunt after a scandal, fall for each other. Beatrix is a ruined woman and Stephen is in politics and cannot marry a woman with her reputation nor does he want to marry. As you can see the plot is wrapped together and stories emerge.
Review: I am so glad I continued with this series. This wrapped up one of my favorite couples ever. (it has been developing for 3 books now in conjuncture with the other relationships). I love how convoluted the plot was but not in a bad way at all. Like all the stories just fit together perfectly. I did like the angst though I will say this story did drag a tad sometimes. I also think this sets up the next relationship really well.

I honestly don’t remember what this book is about that is how forgettable it is, I will eventually read it though because I want to read all of Eloisa Jameses books. I am just not in the mood.

There were way too many main characters in this book, which is a frequent complaint I have for EJ's books but felt more frustrating in this book than others. The couple who were supposed to be the leads in this book, Bea/Stephen, were less interesting to me than the Esme/Sebastian subplot - I love their story and wish they had gotten their own book. Bea was portrayed as both experienced and innocent at the same time (and a bit clueless), which is a weird virgin/whore dichotomy in the same character. Stephen was irritating, and kept sending all sorts of mixed messages to Bea. He loved her but also constantly wished she was someone else, but then didn't like who she changed into to try to please him. Also he's almost 20 years older than her, which is...something. Everyone at the house party is using Stephen for different ends, which seems impossible to not notice, but Bea seems too dumb to realize it (and her friends - and Stephen - didn't tell her? And just let her feel badly about it?). It was strange. I found myself skimming over a lot of Bea's inner monologue. I really just wanted to read more of Esme/Sebastian!
My third Eloisa James book. I still love her writing, and all the literary allusions (English major ahoy!), but the extensive subplots are starting to bother me.
For instance, while Stephen and Bea are presumably the main protagonists in A Wild Pursuit, so much time was spent on the Esme/Sebastian relationship--not to mention Helene's problems, and Esme's aunt & mother...that I frankly skimmed their chapters. (This may also have been due to the fact that I found Bea both too modern and too obnoxious.)
Oh well. On to the next one, for continuity's sake.

Way too much going on this book. James should have done a better job letting the h/h of this book have center stage, rather than working so hard to set up future books and give cameos to previous characters in the quartet.
I liked the book but Esme and her idiotic reactions got on my nerves. Sebastian is not stuck up anymore and I like his determination.
Bea and Stephen make a good couple, but for some reason their story didn't touch me that much.
Looking forward to Rees and Helene's story.
