So I’m a huge fan of the Silo trilogy. Read some of the story when it was still in a short story format, read and reread the books, watched the TV adaptation, talk about it non stop, HUGE fan. I was very nervous and apprehensive about starting this duology, as Silo is a big part of my reading life, but am happy to report that I was pleasantly surprised.

Sand is another post apocalyptic story set in a world where we do not know what happened, but instead of having a protagonist who is trying to find answers, Sand is about a family who is just trying to survive the world and each other.

Howey’s writing and story telling is incredible as usual. The world building is excellent, I mean there’s even a guide to explain the slang used. My only issue is that I just couldn’t get invested with the characters. I really enjoyed the story, but I didn’t have an emotional stake in them. That being said, I did start to feel connected to the characters toward the end (the scene at the end with Vic and Rose? Actual tears) so I am hopeful that continues in the next book.

Overall it’s not Silo, but I don’t think there are many books in the world that are. It is worth reading, especially if you’re a fan of Howey’s work.

Hugh Howey knows his way around a post-apocalyptic dystopia, as he proved with the Silo series. In Sand, he takes the reader to a new dystopian future where huge mining operations have generated vast quantities of sand, burying entire cities by hundreds of meters. The story follows a family of sand divers, who use a technology that allows them to control sand particles enough to swim through and find relics of the world before. Those who live in the path of the winds carrying the sand from the near-constant explosions to the east can barely scratch out a living from those salvage operations, and have to continually excavate new sand or abandon their homes and build new ones above...until those are also buried. The story is gripping, the characters are vivid, and while the setting is pretty depressing, there are enough little moments of achievement and heroic efforts to keep your spirits up through the journey. Definitely one to read for fans of this genre.
