Did he write the last 50 pages?? The voice changed big time. I feel bad the American public is stuck with ‘literature’ like this. My dad lended me the book as I avoid big box hardcovers. The story is decent but I wouldn’t ask anyone to spend their time in these mass produced dull pages.

Excellent.

Great until the ending. The ending just didn’t fit with my image of Sooley as a character.

An emotional journey I was not expecting. Sooley felt like a a real story. And I had to remind myself that it’s just a book. But still. Damn.

This one isn’t like anything of Grisham’s that I’ve read before. I might have rated it a 5 but I thought the last 1/4 or so of the book was a bit less compelling than the rest. But a read that overall was worth the time it took.

I was skeptical given Grisham’s association with trade fiction but I actually did really enjoy this book. Sooley is a very likeable protagonist with a captivating story, but his character arc was kind of disappointing and didn’t really track well in my opinion. Still a solid read, but wish the ending was handled differently.

I enjoyed this book in large part because I love college basketball and that was the vegetable in this meal. The meat was the information about South Sudan and how basketball plays into that country's culture but more importantly about the ongoing violence and how many people are displaced. If you don't like details about basketball games, maybe skip this one.

Huge waste if time. I wouldn't want to read the play by play of a real game, even less for fictional game. The actual story was good, but the ending was a shock and made me despondent after the investment I made in these characters.
