I only started reading the book after watching the movie, and had high expectations from all the raving reviews. I couldn’t just like it. This felt like a difficult read, with all the complex wording.
The striking semblance of Arabs with the 'savage but valiant' Fremen was also annoying, specially for the refrences like jihad and hajj. Paul is a character I couldn’t just like. The characters I expected to play a key role in later parts of the book felt wasted. The biggest example of this is perhaps Thufir Hawat. Every character kept telling the readers about Thufir's intelligence and cunning, but he kept on making mistake after mistake. Also, how Jessica was ready to harm the daughter fetus to secure her son's future felt such a patriarchal norm.
The audio book had great sound effects of a sand dune which I really enjoyed. In the end, the only character i ended up liking from the book is Feyd Rautha from the house Harkonen.

Dune is THE pillar of scifi and im not here to bash on the concept of it and the world building itself, because they are seriously amazing and i truly believe nothing will ever come close to it.
HOWEVER.
i have major issues with the writing, and they make me unable to give more than 4 stars.
in short, the prose, to me, is extremely dry and crude.
it's not captivating, its so distant and cold to the point i couldn't immerse myself in the universe no matter how hard I tried.
The prose then also made it hard for me to care about any of the characters.
i have no emotional attachment to them and i despise how relationships with them are told with just a few words; for example, Paul and Chani are in love and we are aware of it only because she called him "my lover". LIKE ??
I have to give the movies points for expanding on the characters and making them actually interesting and captivating.
And the characters serve as plot points, you can FEEL them being used for the plot, they feel.. flat, in a way.
it lead me to enjoy the Baron a 100 times better than Paul..
so yeah, great idea, truly amazinf, but bad writing imo.
