I was worried to start this book as people said it was a bit difficult to read and slow. After reading it, I feel that is an exaggeration.
The book can be hard to understand sometimes but I think it's those moments where it's almost like a dream state which I think you have to just read it as is and not get too caught up in it. I also think some of the word choice is confusing at first glance but makes sense for building the story.
As for it being slow, the story actually moves quite quickly. Some chapters begin over a year from where the last one ended. I will say that there is not a lot of fighting/action as you would think. They talk a lot about the prowess of different fighters but there are only a few fighting sequences and they don't last long.
I think the biggest appeal to Dune is the world and the political aspect of it. Sometimes when things are very politically based, it leaves the reader confused with intentions and makes it harder to digest. Dune however, tells you what people are thinking a lot. So it causes more dramatic irony knowing what one person thinks compared to someone else. Overall, this is a great book for anyone remotely interested and there are a lot of different aspects people will enjoy.

Reread of this classic was even more enjoyable by the amazing beauty of the Folio Society version with its art, amazing cover, chapter cutouts and quality printing. A gift for Father’s Day, it came days after introducing the now fairly hilarious movie to my daughter.
