Great book. It was filled with interesting information and also entertaining to read. Definitely recommending.

informative
reflective
slow-paced
It is incredibly informative, and surprising on the fact that we don't take sleep more seriously. I definitely recommend it, but as an audio book, reading it can cause you to leave it halfway read, since the pace is very slow.
A mesmerizing collection about sleep summarizing the latest research. The picture painted is overwhelming in how much a lack of adequate sleep impacts all aspects of our lives. Most troubling is the societal changes that would need to be addressed to benefit everyone and overcome the stigma of sleeping being associated with laziness. A few of the sobering implications include: drowsy driving causing more accidents than alcohol and drugs combined, flu vaccines producing 50 percent less immune reaction, and individuals using prescription sleep medications are significantly more likely to die and to develop cancer. The book concludes with a helpful set of sleep recommendations, none of which cost money. Overall an amazing and educational read.
This will not be a five star book for many people I know and it is far heavier in the sleep stuff than the dream stuff, but if you are a brain science nerd then there are so SO many interesting and horrifying studies included. this book has really made me rethink some of my current goals and and made so important and impactful what a bunch of disparate articles couldn’t. It was NOT the most pleasant thing to read over a year post partum and still struggling with chronic undersleep, but perhaps that just made it that much more important.
Bonus- I don’t usually do nonfiction, information heavy books via audiobook because I like to screenshot or copy down bits and pieces of information, but when I saw Steve West was the narrator I broke my own rule- not only could I listen to that guy read the phone book, but since he was the narrator for the audiobooks in the Thief series I felt like Gen was sharing a brilliant plan with me on how to save my small part of the world if I only get a little more sleep

Such an amazing book !!!!! It’s taught me so many integral reasons why we sleep. Highly highly recommend if you would like an interesting, life changing read.
This book changed my life. It gives incredible insight in the various functions of sleep and makes a solid case for a radical overhaul of our sleeping habits. It motivated me to put sleep as a #1 priority in my life, and I’ve witnessed the enormous positive impact of the changes I made to my energy levels during the day, and my ability to work, think and to be creative. Sufficient sleep also gave my health and physical shape a significant boost. I used to be a late night owl, always needing lots of coffee to get going in the morning, often tired during the day. Now, I make sure I close my eyes at 10 pm and wake up fully rested at 6 am, ready for exercise and often with lots of energy for the rest of my day. I’m so glad I read this book!
I mean, it's an academic book, so there are many chapters that go into details at times where I don't see the value for myself, but it's mostly interesting and really helped me understand the real importance of sleep. Totally would recommend.
