Walker compiles a readable overview on why we sleep, its function, and its impact on our health, memory, and behavior. Great points are brought up throughout the book, and he wraps it up by providing suggestions on how to potentially improve society's relationship with sleep. I particularly liked the ideas of using biometrics through FitBits or a similar medical device to track our sleep quantity and quality, as well as pushing back school start times to better align with teenagers' circadian rhythm.
While there were genuinely useful takeaways, Walker makes some bold claims that have been proven to be kind of cherry-picked or even completely incorrect. A writer named Alexey Guzey compiled a list which summarizes the factual errors found throughout which cheapens the book a bit.
Overall, would recommend the audiobook - just make sure to take some points with a grain of salt and (as always) look into claims he makes yourself.

Good book, it shows up how sleep has an impact on different areas of our lives. It does go really deep in studies and technical aspects, so sometimes it's a little bit hard to not be bored. But in general, is a good read.
Quotes:
Within the space of a mere hundred years, human beings have abandoned their biologically mandated need for adequate sleep — one that evolution spent 3,400,000 years perfecting in service of life-support functions. As a result, the decimation of sleep throughout industrialized nations is having a catastrophic impact on our health, our life expectancy, our safety, our productivity, and the education of our children.
I believe it is time for us to reclaim our right to a full night of sleep, without embarrassment or the damaging stigma of laziness.

Read at Elizabeth's recommendation <3
I found the information in this book to be very compelling and, although I am a self-proclaimed sleep hater, I do feel a little more motivated to prioritize my sleep better after finishing it.
At times Walker makes large and semi-vague claims that I'm not fully convinced are actually backed by solid evidence, but even if some of the evidence is miniscule, there seems to be enough of it to at least show that good sleep is more complex and vital than most of the world gives it credit for. I will definitely be taking some of his suggestions on how to improve sleep to heart!!

Fascinating and brilliant. Written in easy to understand language with explanations repeated throughout so you don’t have to keep referring back to the first mention of a term or concept.

I wish I read this sooner! I appreciate nonfiction that makes an empirical studies interesting/engaging. Very interesting and well-written.
Moderate: Drug use, Car accident
This book was super interesting and with just the first chapter it was already scaring me about my own sleeping habits (which I'm still working on to try to change them) but I will finish this later. I just needed to return it to my library, I shall read it later for sure. Also school does not help with reading for fun at all (sigh) how sad. Finish Later, left on chapter 2, page 13.
The author is certainly an evagelical enthusiast about his views which sometimes takes him beyond where research has so far reached, as well as into policy and therapy outside his areas of expertise. That aside this is an informative and thought provoking look at sleep and its importance to the functioning of the human body, especially the brain. It would be hard to imagine anyone reading it without then taking at least a little extra care to get the best nights sleep that they can! ... and the book provides loads of information to help you do just that.
