really important read and very interesting. took off one star for reductive discussion of autism and some pretty goofy "futuristic" technology proposals at the end, including endorsing self-driving cars which... well...

I implore everyone I know to read this book (well and people I don't know either). If you don't have time for it, check out the shorter podcast interview with Joe Rogan, episode 1109 when Matthew Walker was the guest. This could be life changing for many people.

Update: when I originally wrote this Joe Rogan wasn't as polarizing as he is now. I still recommend episode 1109 because of what Matthew Walker has to say.

Najciekawsza i prawdopodobnie najważniejsza książka, jaką przeczytałem.

This is a terrifying, life-changing book. Everyone should know this information. This is the only thing that has gotten me to go to bed at a reasonable hour, and I can genuinely say I'm benefiting from the extra sleep - it's clear in the short term. We tend to discount the long-term effects of poor sleep quality or short-sleeping, but we shouldn't. Just knowing that by cutting my REM sleep short by waking up early my relationships will suffer (because REM sleep is more important for social-emotional health, and most REM sleep occurs in the morning) has made a huge impact and made me feel like it's OK that I'm not getting up early to exercise. I listened to the audiobook from my library, but I'll be purchasing it and re-reading it whenever I need to get my head back on straight about the importance of sleep.

If you're reading this review, you should read this book.

I don't think I learned anything new about sleep hygiene, but his descriptions of all the scientific studies were interesting (and somewhat terrifying). So now I can be more anxious about insomnia? I liked that he offered ideas to try to improve sleep at the societal level.

"Accepting that our lack of sleep is a slow form of self-euthanasia, what can be done about it?"

An excellent, accessible, and informative dive into the science behind sleep: its biological drive, the effect NREM and REM sleep has on the brain and one's day-to-day life, the role of dreams, the impact reduced sleep has on a person, and the societal influences modern life is having on the overall quality of sleep across the population.

Highly recommended reading, regardless of the quality of sleep you believe you are getting.
