This book is recommended for kids aged 9-13. I think kids that are interested in time travel and/or history would enjoy it but not necessarily "for kids who loved Harry Potter" as the cover states. I liked it. This is the first book in a trilogy and I'll probably check out the next one at some point. Kate and Peter are kids who are accidentally transported to the year 1763. Luckily they are met by Gideon who helps them, but The Tar Man has taken their time machine. The kids must not only find the time machine but also learn to live with the customs of the times and lack of things like telephones and cars.

How can you resist this super cool cover? However, I wasn't super impressed with this one. We bounced back and forth between our time traveling teens and the goings on of their parents in the present. A little boring and a little predictable. And, a huge cliffhanger at the end. Naturally I will have to dig up the second of this trilogy just to find out what happens.

I'm to the point that I'm dreading reading this book. It's not that it's bad. I just feel like I've read this same story a thousand times, plus it's slow and boring. I think it's time to return this to the library.

Hooked from the start - great characters, adventure, time travel and a fascinating peak into life in the 18th century.

This is my fist ever ARC and boy was I excited to get it. Wasnt sure what to think of the book more then it sounds good and its unique. I have found lately that all young adult books have the same flow to them and i cant stand a book like that so I figured what the hay ill try it. Im glad i did it was awesome. Its the start of a trilogy and i can totally see this becoming a bestselling set at that. It was very unique in its plot and characters, the development was at the right pace, didnt rush through the details or stretch them out needlessly. The book had a great flow and became a page turner for me. I am sure that Ms. Archer will have a great fanbase on her hands after this book is realeased :)

Okay. It's a kids' book. My disbelief was never quite suspended. The ending was expected. (Can't get everyone back in the right time and place when we have sequels planned, can we?) There are some memorable characters here. I liked the parson and Molly. Kate and Peter could be a little irritating.

This is a pretty good book for a young teen. It made me nostalgic for Connie Willis's Doomsday Book, though the only similarities are the time traveling. I loved that book. This one was light and entertaining and forgettable. I might have liked it more if I were 12. My favorite part of the book was the first chapter of the next book, included at the end. Guess I'll be reading it.
adventurous emotional hopeful lighthearted tense medium-paced

I enjoyed this book just as much as I did 13 years ago when I was a teenager. It’s surprisingly funny!

YA book, which I'm increasingly starting to really enjoy. I think my daughter will like this book. It has history, science, adventure, suspense. Two kids are accidentally sent back in time due to an "Anti-gravity" machine mishap. They surive on their wits, and a lot of good luck. The title of the book is a bit of a misnamer, and I think it has been renamed. While Gideon is a main character - the book really centers on Kate & Peter. I have the next two in the serious on my Zune from audible.com and am looking forward to hearing what happens next.

The plot of this book did slow down at points, but the action was enough to move me forward, and by the last third of the novel I couldn't put it down. I had a little bit of difficulty connecting with the characters, as they stayed fairly static throughout the story. However, the historical facts about 18th century England that were part of the novel were fascinating, and the end of the book provides a twist for one of the characters that I wasn't really expecting. Overall, this book wouldn't be great for a read-aloud or novel study, but should certainly be placed in a middle school library for students who are interested in fantasy novels.
