This was a really great start to a series that I think I will enjoy more of. I say think because unlike the other danmei I have read from Seven Seas, this series had quite a slow start. I know most of these long-form drama novels are usually slow-burns, but this was actually a slow read, too, due to the complicated worldbuilding. I actually had to pay attention to the details and the names being thrown back and forth. This wasn't a detriment -- I really enjoyed reading it -- but it felt more dense than, say, Scum Villain or the first few volumes of 2ha.

Trying to explain this book to my mom was fun... "It's a Chinese historical fiction fantasy sci-fi drama" is a lot of key words to throw out at once. But having watched two dramas based off Priest's other novels, I can guess how the rest of this series will go. I think they've done an excellent job setting up the dramatic stakes for the main characters. I love that neither of them is infatuated with the other. After 2 other Master/Disciple stories (Scum Villain, 2Ha) I'm not sure how much I love the Godfather-Godson relationship... But the timeline is moving quickly and Cheng Gang will be an adult soon enough. This type of relationship is still a little odd to me... But the concepts of the steampunk technology, the dramatic imperial politics, and the diversity of the characters introduced in this first novel all have me hooked.

Oh, but I hate the fucking monocle.

On to the next!

The first volume is more like a prolonged introduction. We get to know the main characters, learn about their past and upbringing, and how the world they live in works, what powers operate here. I'm intrigued by the story and got some Qiang Jin Jiu vibes.
I like the promise of intrigue and backstabbing and can't wait for it.
Gu Yun and Chang Geng are two cinnamon rolls who have no idea how to talk to each other and understand one another. I'm curious about how their relationship will develop considering lack of communication skills between these two.
I like the minor characters, I would like to see more of their growth in the story.
