This book has one of the better plots in all the danmei novels I’ve read so far. It feels like a good, steady introduction into the wuxia genre, though with a steampunk twist. It did tend to lose my interest in the third, arc, though, and I struggled to finish it. I’m excited to see more interactions between Chang Geng and Gu Yun, though!

This was such a banger. I entered expecting a romance, and was instead offered a political intrigue/pre-war story about the looming threats of colonialism, christianity, and the west. Parts of the plot had heist energy — which I adored — and a lot of it was spent with a really fun cast of characters. This felt very different from most other danmei I've read; I'm not entirely sure of the reason yet, but there's something very steadfast and firm to this book. I will also say that I know this is an age-gap/pseudo-familial romance, and that can definitely be poorly done and/or gross, but I'm gonna be give my honest opinion here: go off, kings. I'm genuinely intrigued with where it's going and I'm rooting for it.
