This is a book club book and I have read it before. I really enjoy the setting, I don't read many books set in 1970s' Italy, and I find the characters interesting. There is something lacking, I suppose, in the book as a whole. I wonder why Michele doesn't, as an adult, make any judgement on his actions as a child, and after mentioning a couple of things he has done as an adult, at the end we are given no clue how he grew up after the events he is recounting.
I am left wondering what happened to Filippo and Michele's father, too. There is a nasty sense of foreboding as I read this book and, while won't say that I didn't enjoy it at all, I think I was underwhelmed.

A very interesting plot but the writing is really poor, not sure if I can blame the translation or the original writing for this

I'm Not Scared is a compelling and beautifully written book told from the point of view of a 9 year old boy in Italy. It was a scorching summer in 1978 that Michele made a monumental discovery whilst out playing with his friends. The awfulness of this discovery only gradually dawns on him. This is gripping and upsetting but I had to know how it ended!
